Acupuncture is the safest, gentlest and most environmentally friendly medicine on the planet.

Acupuncture works by correcting the flow of bioelectricity, or qi, in the body. When this goes wrong you can get symptoms such as pain and stiffness.

In fact all symptoms can be understood as abnormalities in qi flow. In fact, we are so sure that we can help your health condition that we guarantee our treatments (see conditions here).

The Acupuncture Hospital aims to offer to treat everyone for just £20 an acupuncture treatment. This money goes to the upkeep of the hospital. These treatments are given by our Intern (student) acupuncturists whilst being supervised by fully trained acupuncturists. If you wish to see a specific acupuncturist, e.g. Dr Keown, they may charge more.

For those for whom £20 is still too much we plan on creating a charitable fund that provides free treatments.

For those who want to pay more you can see an Associate Acupuncturist (some of whom now live in different geographical areas) including Dr Keown.

Affordable healthcare for those who need it.

Frequently asked questions

  • Your body works a bit like this computer screen you are reading now. Behind this screen are electrical currents that make it ‘come to life’. This electricity is not easy to see but it undoubtedly exists.

The same is true of your body. There are electrical currents in every cell, organ, heart, brain and muscles. These electrical currents are organised and alive and it is this that the ancient Chinese were talking about when they described qi.

Sometimes, these living electrical currents, or qi, can go wrong and cause problems. If it gets stuck it will tell you by causing pain.

  • Acupuncture, done by a trained and sensitive practitioner, can start to correct this abnormal movement of qi in the body.

Pain is not the only thing acupuncture works on. Almost all symptoms emerge from an abnormal movement of qi: so primary is it to health. Much depends on the quality of practitioner which is why training is so important to The Acupuncture Hospital.

We are happy to see any patients regardless of your symptoms and will endeavour to salve them. If you have symptoms (e.g. pain, swelling, irritability) we believe we can help.

  • Acupuncture done by trained practitioners is extremely well tolerated.

One of the guiding principles of treatment is that it should be as comfortable as possible ideally causing no pain. The needles we use are incredibly fine - around a hundred of these needles could fit into a typical needle used to take blood - and very sharp. This means sometimes you may not even notice them.

Acupuncture works by changing qi flow in the body. When the needle contacts your qi you may feel aching, numbness and even a sense of electricity. These are all normal and a good sign that the treatment will be successful.

If you have pain you should expect your pain to be better after treatment.

Treatment normally lasts an hour to an hour and a half. After treatment you may feel a little ‘spacey’. This is fine and normally a sign of a good treatment. However, you should not drive if you feel your driving is impaired.

“I have greatly benefited from Acupuncturing by Dr. Dan. I walked in the hospital few weeks ago as I have pain in my shoulder and arm mainly from long Covid. After my session I felt really good and was pain free..”
